An argument I had with my brother about whether to own a car with an automatic versus a manual transmission. Instead of driving a car, I edited the dialog to refer to various ways of getting milk. I think this is what scientists call symbolism. It proves I’m right and he’s wrong.

“Man, if you could get milk from a carton in the grocery store, or take it out of the cow yourself, and over a period of like a year or so, it would end up costing the same price either way, which would you choose?”
“Definitely I’d choose to milk the cow. No question.”
“Really? That’s surprising. Is it because you grew up milking cows, or—”
“When you milk the cow yourself you have so much more control. You go to a store, you’ve basically got whatever milk the store wants you to buy. I don’t want the store to tell me what milk I drink.”
“Yeah, but it’s so much easier and more efficient. It takes a lot less time.”
“You get used to milking a cow. Pretty soon it’s just a reflex.”
“Yeah but couldn’t you be doing other things instead of milking a cow? Like you could be eating breakfast, drinking something, or whatever.”
“You can eat while milking a cow, it just takes some practice.”
“Well, buying from the grocery store is also safer.”
“How is it safer.”
“If you’re milking a cow, you could get distracted, which is unsafe, you know.. or maybe the cow could kick you. It’s just an inherent danger.”
“If you milk the cow yourself you can control how much milk comes out, you can control, like, what bucket it goes into. Plus you can get more milk out of a cow if you milk it by hand.”
“Yeah, but when do you need all this extra milk? You don’t even drink a lot of milk. I don’t get it.. I could see milking the cow yourself if this was the 19th century or whatever, but now we have grocery stores, we don’t need to do that.”
“Milking cows is just better, man.”
