More Temple Lessons:
A rich man came to tour the temple, and when he had seen it he asked Joshu why the monks, who were said to be wise, slept on bare mats and ate only rice.
Joshu said, “Where does a wise man need to sleep? What does he need to eat?”
But actually it was because Joshu had embezzled quite a lot of money from the temple.
A student and his master were meditating in the garden. When they were finished, the student asked how long it would take to attain enlightenment. The master said, “when you have counted every grain of sand in this garden, at that moment you will attain enlightenment.”
After many hours of counting, the student gave up. He walked out of the temple through the front gate and returned to his village.
The gardener wondered why there were so many holes in his garden.
The master laughed nervously and said, “when you know the answer to that question, at that moment you will attain enlightenment.”
Toyo was asked to contemplate the sound of one hand clapping. He went to sit on a mountainside and meditate over the problem. He tried to clear his mind of all knowledge. When his mind was pretty much clear of all knowledge, he heard the sound of a waterfall faintly roaring down in the valley.
“Is this the sound of one hand clapping?” he asked himself.
Then he heard the breathing of the wind.
“Is this the sound of one hand clapping?” he asked himself.
Then he heard the sound of a man snoring.
“Is this the… hey, who’s there?” he said to the grass. When he looked in the grass he found a gang of pirates sleeping. He returned to the temple and told everybody, and many of them laughed at him for not knowing to stay away from old Pirate’s Peak.
